‘Henry V111- England’s most Controversial King’ , a talk by Dave Walmsley, Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society

Known for his 6 wives – there is much more to this king. He fought wars against the French and the Scots; he began to reform the country’s religious beliefs. He destroyed the monasteries and built palaces, fortresses and the navy. What made him tick?

The talk will also look at the King’s leading ministers – including Thomas Wolsey and Thomas Cromwell – both of whom served him loyally but ended up condemned.

Summer Soul with the Soul Federation

The Soul Federation is an award-winning band playing Soul, Northern Soul and Blues Brothers hits. They play classic soul the way it should be played – no synths!  With appearances at the legendary Cavern Club to close the Liverpool 2024 Mod Weekender the band know how to have a good time. Appearances at Dubbed Out Festival 2024 and Roughley’s Bike show 2024 demonstrate their appeal to audiences of all ages and styles.

This 10-piece band of experienced musicians started setting dance floors alight across the North West and beyond in 2017. With a full horn section and harmony vocals Soul Federation create that classic soul sound for a great night out.

If you like Stevie Wonder, Frank Wilson, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Kool and the Gang, Candi Staton, and Blues Brothers etc this is the show for you.

‘ Ukraine and the Return of History: From 1991 to Today’, a talk by Bohdan Bilyk

Since regaining independence in 1991, Ukraine has been at the centre of geopolitical struggles that challenge the idea of a post-Cold War "end of history." Bohdan will explore Ukraine’s transformation over the past three decades, from its early post-Soviet years to the revolutions, conflicts, and ongoing fight for sovereignty. By examining key events such as the Orange Revolution, the Euromaidan protests, and Russia’s aggression, discussion will focus on how Ukraine’s history continues to shape the world around.

Accessible Film: "Strangers on a Train" (1951)

A psychopath tries to forcibly persuade a tennis star to agree to his theory that two strangers can get away with murder by submitting to his plan to kill the other's most-hated person.

Waterside’s friendly screenings aim to make cinema more accessible to local communities by providing a fun and inclusive experience to enable people living with additional access needs, their families and carers to attend the cinema in a safe and welcoming environment.

The screenings include low lights, no adverts or trailers and the audience move can around or sing along to any musical numbers! The cinema is open 30 minutes before the screening so that people can familiarise themselves with the space.

There is a short break halfway through the film for free tea/ coffee.

Bridgewater Blues Band

Bridgewater Blues Band have been playing the North West Blues circuit since 2008. They include three original members, Jon Ingham (guitar), Chris Milward, (bass) and Andy Hart (drums); and Chris Small (vocal & harmonica) who has appeared at Colne Blues Festival, and Knutsford, Chorlton and Sale Festivals.  The Band are due to play at the Ribble Valley Jazz-Blues Festival in 2025.  Their sound and arrangements are original and authentic, capturing the spirit of Mississippi, Memphis and Chicago Blues at its best.
